1st and 4th images: Miraculous Stonewalls of Fort Pilar, Zamboanga, Philippines

Real Fuerza de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragosa or Fort Pilar was built by the Spanish authorities in 1635 to ward off Muslim, Dutch, British, and Portuguese attacks.

Said fort, the imposing stonewalls of which are made of coral blocks, was eventually converted into a shrine. A metal crown caps the embossed figure of the Our Lady of Pilar on the eastern wall of the Fort. Miraculous powers are attributed to the statue of Our Lady of the Pillar, the patron Saint of Zamboanga City.

A distinct attraction of the church, aside from its elaborate ceiling design, is a well located in front of the communion rail. The well waters are believed to be miraculous.

3rd image: Magellan's Cross, Cebu City Philippines

The Magellan's cross is the symbol of Cebu City, the oldest city in the Philippines.

It's a replica of the wooden cross which the explorer Ferdinand Magellan and his men planted in Cebu on April 14, 1521 to mark the beginning of the Christianization of the island.

The cross is housed in a small chapel next to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. The ceiling mural depicts the scene of the first mass and commemorates the conversion of the first Filipinos to Christianity.

The orange-flower perfumes the bower,

The undertow awaits

Definitely quite a departure from your usual. To me this is really exciting. The composition is very good. The colour mode chosen seemed appropriate . Thu 27-Oct-2005 08:33
